About Copaíba Oil
Nukini Copaiba oil is pure, unprocessed oleoresin harvested directly by tapping the tree. Unlike many essential oils made from dried balsam, this oil is simply collected and filtered — no additional processing, no dilution. The Nukini sustainably source this oil through environmentally respectful methods focused on preserving the trees for future generations.
There are many ways to enjoy it. Copaíba is most at home in skin care: unlike concentrated essential oils, the pure oleoresin can be applied directly to the skin with no carrier oil needed — smoothed on wherever skin wants soothing and toning, worked in as a massage oil, or added to a warm bath a few drops at a time. Its woody, sweet, earthy scent is calming and uplifting, inhaled directly or diffused, and it makes a beautiful base note in natural perfumery. And in Amazonian spiritual practice, copaíba is prized as a calming, grounding oil for meditation and ceremony. Customers call it a "golden oil" that "smells beautiful and feels great on the skin" — and one reviewer, born in Brazil, writes that she "never was without it" in her home.
The copaíba is one of the giants of the Amazon — a tree that can live for 400 years and grow over 100 feet tall. Its oleoresin is tapped much as maple syrup is: a small hole is drilled into the trunk, the resin drips out and is collected, and the hole is plugged so the same tree can be returned to, season after season. In Brazil, the families who harvest copaíba often tend the same trees for generations.
Copaíba has travelled the world for four centuries. Jesuit missionaries carried it back to Europe, where it was recorded by 1625 and became known as "Jesuit's balsam," and it remained listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1820 to 1910. Today the Brazilian Amazon still supplies most of the world's copaíba, and the oleoresin accounts for roughly 95% of Brazil's oil-resin production.
