What is a Tepi?

A tepi is a traditional ceremonial pipe used by Indigenous tribes of the Amazon rainforest to administer rapé (hapé). Unlike a kuripe, which is designed for self-application, a tepi is used to serve rapé from one person to another during ritual, healing, or ceremonial practice.

Tepis are typically long, hollow pipes crafted from natural materials such as bamboo, bone, or hardwoods. Their extended form allows the facilitator—often a shaman or ceremonial guide—to deliver the medicine with breath, intention, and precision.

Because a tepi is used in service to others, it symbolizes trust, guidance, and the transmission of ancestral knowledge within Amazonian traditions.

What is Rapé (Hapé)?

Hapé (rapé) — also spelled rapeh or hapeh — is a sacred Amazonian snuff medicine, prepared and used in ceremony by Indigenous tribes for centuries. Each handcrafted blend combines sun-cured jungle tobacco and dried medicinal plants with alkaline tree ashes, every formula reflecting the unique traditions of its makers. Traditionally, this shamanic snuff is administered with a bone or bamboo kuripe pipe, blown gently into the nostrils.
