What is rapé? A short guide to hapé, the Amazonian snuff

Rapé — pronounced ha-PAY, and just as often written hapé — is a finely ground blend of sacred Amazonian tobacco and the ash of selected trees, seeds and forest plants. It is not smoked. A small measure is blown into each nostril, either by a practice partner using a tepi or by yourself with a kuripe pipe. Tribes across the western Amazon have prepared and used it this way for generations.

What people come back for is the clearing. Rapé medicine is traditionally worked with to settle the body and quiet mental chatter, and for ten to twenty minutes attention rests in one place. Many take hapé medicine before meditation, ceremony, or work that asks for full attention; others simply at the start of the day. It is not psychedelic and it does not take you anywhere you do not go yourself.

Every blend carries the signature of the hands that made it. Tsunu is one of the most widely used ashes in the Amazon, so several tribes prepare a tsunu — and two hapé snuffs can carry the same name and be different medicines. What separates them is the prayers of the person doing the work, the strain of tobacco they favor, the ratio of tobacco to ash, and whether the bark or the trunk was burned.

Rapé tobacco is strong, and respect for it is part of the practice. Begin with the smallest measure, sit down, and let it pass. Hapé tobacco is chosen and blended by the same families who prepare each rapé, and every hapé for sale on this page comes from hands we know. Both spellings describe one medicine: rapé is the Portuguese word for snuff, hapé is how it sounds. A good rapé snuff is hand-prepared — the tobacco, ash, and the plants combined with the maker's prayers. Haux.

Your first hapé ceremony

01Find a quiet place free of distractions, tissues within reach.
02Measure your dose — a match head for each nostril. Press out any clumps with the kuripe tip until it's talc-fine.
03Load half into the long arm of the kuripe.
04Close your eyes, breathe slowly, and name your intention.
05Breathe in. Place the kuripe to your nostril and mouth, and gently exhale.
06Repeat on the other side with the other half — both nostrils, for balance.
07Stay seated for a few minutes and let it settle. Needing to blow your nose or spit is normal — it's part of the clearing.

Questions people ask first

Most people describe a few seconds of intensity, then the mental chatter drops and attention settles in one place for ten to twenty minutes. It is not psychedelic, and you stay fully yourself throughout.

A kuripe is a small V-shaped pipe you use on yourself. A tepi is longer and is used by another person to blow the medicine for you — the traditional ceremony form. Beginners usually start with a kuripe, and one is included free in the Hapé Starter Kit.

Start with the Hapé Starter Kit — three gentle blends and a kuripe in one box for $71 — or use the strength filter and stay in Light or Regular while you find your feet. Every blend also comes as a 1.5 gr sample for $5, so you can try one before committing to a larger bottle.

Orders placed before 11am MT, Monday to Friday, ship the same day by USPS from New Mexico. US orders of $109 or more get free USPS Priority. Orders over $325 ship free worldwide by UPS, dispatched on Mondays. An optional delivery guarantee at checkout replaces lost or stolen packages.

Buy from a seller with a direct connection to the makers. Much of the rapé sold by resellers and wholesalers is gray-market — often not made by a tribe at all. The ingredients may be there, but rapé is a spiritual medicine: without the maker's prayers and intention, it isn't the same thing. Rapé snuff is a fine blend of Amazonian tobacco and tree ash — and what makes it real is who prepared it.

Yes — our rapé is prepared by tribal families in Acre, and we've bought directly from the makers since 2015, in a fair exchange that supports their craft and keeps a generational practice alive. The makers share what each blend truly is — its plants, its ash, how it's prepared — and our job is to be careful keepers of that knowledge: honoring it, protecting it, and passing it on faithfully. It's a relationship that grows closer every year.
