About Samauma Root Rapé (Hapé)

This regular strength blend from the Kuntanawa tribe of Acre, Brazil is built around the root of the Samauma tree (Ceiba sp.), combined with tobacco from tribal lands. Where the Samauma Flower opens and lifts, the root works in the opposite direction — deeply anchoring, connecting to something old and vast beneath the surface.

The Samauma — Mãe das Árvores, Mother of Trees — is the Amazon's great sacred giant, its immense buttress roots fanning out from the trunk in wooden walls wide enough for jaguars to shelter within. In Kuntanawa tradition, these roots are understood as the source of the tree's ancestral strength: reaching down as deeply as the canopy reaches up, holding the forest floor while the tree touches the sky.

Nothing is felled for this rapé. A samauma takes two or three hundred years to grow, and when one of these ancient trees finally comes down, the roots are lifted from the earth with it — exposed, and only then gathered. No living samauma is cut. In the words of our maker in Acre: "Os povos originários nunca cortam. Isso causa um desequilíbrio." The original peoples never cut. It causes an imbalance.

The giants grow only along the great rivers and beside small pools of water. Through the rainy season the tree draws water down and holds it against the dry — which is why, in Acre, they say that beneath every samauma there is a river. The people who gather it know the tree by its local names rather than a Latin one; there are several samaumas in the forest, and the medicine comes from the one that has fallen.
